Saipan(ไซปัน) เปรียบเสมือนเพชรน้ำงามที่ซ่อนตัวอยู่ในมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิก เป็นหนึ่งในหมู่เกาะที่มีชื่อเรียกว่า The Northern Marianas ชื่อของ Saipan นั้นมีความหมายว่า แล่นไปสู่ "เกาะแห่งความว่างเปล่า" (Sailing to The Island of Emptiness) แต่ด้วยความเป็นจริงแล้ว ความงดงามและความหลากหลายของเกาะ Saipan ผิดกับความหมายตามชื่ออย่างสิ้นเชิง เพราะเป็นที่ดึงดูดตลาดท่องเที่ยวอย่างมหาศาล โดยเฉพาะนักเดินทางจากประเทศในแถบเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ Dive & Travel พาผู้อ่านร่วมเดินทางไปค้นพบและสัมผัสกับความงดงามของหมู่เกาะในมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิกแห่งนี้ นักเขียนและช่างภาพ Joon H. Park มีเรื่องเล่าอีกมากมายจากการเดินทางตลอด 7 วัน

ประวัติโดยย่อของ The Northern Marianas Islands
ความงดงามของ Saipan ถูกค้นพบโดย แมคเจลแลน นักสำรวจที่มีชื่อเสียงชาวโปรตุเกส เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1521 ช่วงเวลาหนึ่งที่สเปนได้ปกครองเกาะสามแห่งที่เรียกว่า "The Marianas Islands" เป็นเวลาถึง 200 ปี หลังจากนั้น สเปนได้ขายเกาะให้กับเยอรมันเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1898 ในช่วงการปกครองโดยเยอรมันนี้เองที่ได้มีการก่อตั้งโรงเรียนบนเกาะถึงสามแห่ง แห่งหนึ่งที่ Garapan อีกแห่งที่ Tanapag และอีกที่บนเกาะ Rota โดยมีครูชาว Chamorros ซึ่งเป็นชนชาติดั้งเดิมบนเกาะเป็นผู้สอน

ในยุคสมัยที่สเปนปกครองหมู่เกาะเหล่านี้ ยังไม่มีการบริการสาธารณสุขกับคนพื้นเมืองที่เหมาะสม พอมาในยุคการปกครองของเยอรมันจึงจัดให้มีการฉีดวัคซีนป้องกันโรคฝีดาษโดยทันทีเพราะในหลายศตวรรษที่ผ่านมาโรคนี้เป็นสาเหตุให้ชาว Chamorro ล้มตายกันเป็นจำนวนมาก นอกจากนี้รัฐบาลเยอรมันยังได้จัดตั้งกำลังตำรวจขึ้นด้วย แต่ในที่สุดก็เห็นว่าประชากรที่รักความสงบบนเกาะนั้นทำให้การจัดกำลังตำรวจแทบจะไม่มีความจำเป็นใดๆ เลย แต่อย่างน้อยก็ได้ช่วยปลูกฝังวินัยและการร่วมมือร่วมใจของชนเผ่า Chamorro และ Carolinian ซึ่งร่วมเป็นหนึ่งในกองกำลังตำรวจที่จัดตั้งขึ้น

หลังจากการปกครองโดยเยอรมันได้ผ่านพ้นไป NMI ได้ถูกยึดครองโดยรัฐบาลญี่ปุ่นในปี ค.ศ. 1914 ซึ่งเป็นสมัยสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 ครั้งนั้นทหารจำนวนมากทั้งชนพื้นเมืองรวมทั้งชาวเกาหลีต้องสละชีพในสงครามระหว่างญี่ปุ่นกับสหรัฐอเมริกา

ตั้งแต่สมัยปี ค.ศ. 1944 เขตปกครองอิสระของThe Northern Marianas ประกอบไปด้วย Saipan Tinian และ Rota ในปี ค.ศ. 1987 NMI ได้กลายมาเป็นดินแดนภายใต้การปกครองของสหรัฐอเมริกาว่าด้วยสนธิสัญญาการปกครองดินแดน ซึ่งประชากรท้องถิ่นถือสัญชาติอเมริกัน เมื่อเทียบกับ Guam ซึ่งเป็นเกาะที่อยู่ในบริเวณใกล้เคียงกันแล้ว นับว่า NMI ได้รับประโยชน์จากสหรัฐอเมริกามากกว่าเนื่องจากมีฐานะเป็นรัฐอิสระที่มีอำนาจปกครองตนเอง

The Northern Marianas ตั้งอยู่บนศูนย์กลางของมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิกทางฝั่งตะวันตก เป็นประเทศที่ประกอบไปด้วยหมู่เกาะทั้งสิ้นจำนวน 14 เกาะ มีรูปร่างลักษณะคล้ายคันธนูบนแผนที่ภูมิศาสตร์ Saipan เป็นเกาะที่มีขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดรองจาก Guam มีแนวปะการังน้ำตื้นที่สวยงามและกำลังเติบโตรอบชายฝั่ง

Garapan คือย่านที่มีความพลุกพล่านที่สุดบนฝั่งทางทิศตะวันตกของเกาะ เป็นศูนย์รวมของโรงแรมชั้นยอด ร้านอาหารที่มีความหลากหลายจากทั่วทุกมุมโลก รวมถึงห้างสรรพสินค้าขนาดใหญ่และสวนสนุก ส่วนย่านที่เป็นที่พักอาศัยของชุมชนบนเกาะ Saipan จะเป็นแถบ Susupe และ Chalan Kanoa ทางทิศตะวันตกของเกาะค่อนมาทางฝั่งทะเลใกล้กับประเทศฟิลิปปินส์

ชนพื้นเมือง Chamorro และ Carolinian อยู่ร่วมกันบนเกาะอย่างสันติมาช้านาน ความเป็นอยู่ของผู้คนได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากนิกายโรมันคาทอลิคตั้งแต่สมัยการปกครองของสเปน ประกอบกับการใช้ชีวิตสไตล์คนอเมริกัน ร้อยละ 90 ของ
ประชากรบนเกาะเป็นชนเผ่า Chamorro ซึ่งบนเกาะมีคนอยู่อาศัยประมาณ 69,000 คน ที่เหลือคือชาวเกาหลี ญี่ปุ่น
ฟิลิปปินส์ จีน และชนกลุ่มน้อยอื่นๆ

แรกเริ่มเดิมทีนั้น ผมวางแผนว่าจะสำรวจเกาะทั้งสามคือ Saipan Tinian และ Rota แต่ดูเหมือนว่าผมประเมิน
สถานการณ์ผิดไป ผมและคณะเดินทางที่เป็นคนไทยอีก 6 ท่านนั้นพยายามที่จะทำกิจกรรมแต่ละอย่างกันแบบรวบรัดเพื่อที่จะสามารถครอบคลุมทุกซอกทุกมุมของเกาะทั้งสามภายในระยะเวลาที่จำกัด แต่นั่นก็เป็นไปไม่ได้เพราะบนเกาะแห่งนี้มีแหล่งท่องเที่ยวและกิจกรรมน่าสนใจทั้งแบบกลางแจ้งและในร่มจำนวนมากให้ได้ทำกัน นักเดินทางหลายๆ ท่านคงจะรู้สึกอย่างเดียวกับผมที่ว่าการเดินทางมายังจุดหมายที่มีชื่อเสียงระดับโลกเช่นนี้ คงจะไม่สมบูรณ์และสมความตั้งใจนักหากได้เดินทางมาเยือนเพียงครั้งเดียว

ด้วยเหตุผลทางภูมิศาสตร์นักท่องเที่ยวที่มาเยือนส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นชาวเกาหลีและญี่ปุ่น ตามมาด้วยนักท่องเที่ยวจากประเทศจีนซึ่งเพิ่มจำนวนมากขึ้นในปัจจุบัน การเดินทางทางอากาศจากประเทศเหล่านั้นใช้เวลาเพียง 4 ชั่วโมงโดยประมาณ สำหรับนักเดินทางชาวเกาหลีและญี่ปุ่นแล้ว การมาที่ Saipan ไม่ต้องผ่านขั้นตอนการทำวีซ่าให้ยุ่งยากและสามารถอยู่ในฐานะนักท่องเที่ยวได้นานถึง 30 วัน สำหรับนักท่องเที่ยวชาวไทยที่วางแผนจะเดินทางมาที่
The Northern Marianas Islands จะต้องได้รับการอนุมัติเอกสารจากปลายทางก่อน ซึ่งทางกองตรวจคนเข้าเมืองจะออกจดหมายที่เป็นเหมือนวีซ่าให้ผ่านเข้าประเทศ เรียกว่า "Authorization to Board Letter" (ATB Letter)

เมื่อผมและคณะเดินทางมาถึงที่จุดตรวจคนเข้าเมืองก็พบว่าเอกสารการผ่านเข้าเมืองมารออยู่แล้ว ผมซึ่งเป็นชาวเกาหลีนั้นผ่านกองตรวจคนเข้าเมืองอย่างราบรื่นในขณะที่คณะเดินทางชาวไทยอีก 6 ท่านต้องหงุดหงิดใจอยู่มากเมื่อถูกเจ้าหน้าที่กักเก็บตั๋วและหนังสือเดินทางเอาไว้ เราทุกคนต่างก็มีข้อข้องใจว่าเหตุใดจึงเป็นเช่นนั้น จากข้อมูลที่ได้รับทราบมาคือ มีคนไทยจำนวนหลายร้อยคนที่เข้ามาทำงานบนเกาะแห่งนี้ ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่จะอยู่ในอุตสาหกรรมการเย็บเสื้อผ้า ดังนั้นคนไทยในฐานะนักท่องเที่ยว อาจจะยังไม่ได้รับความสะดวกในจุดนี้เท่าที่ควร อาจเป็นเรื่องที่ภาครัฐทั้งสองฝ่ายต้องทบทวนในนโยบายระหว่างประเทศเพื่อความสะดวกของนักเดินทางให้มากขึ้น

ในที่สุดเราก็ได้รับคำตอบจากเจ้าหน้าที่ของการท่องเที่ยวท้องถิ่นที่ชื่อ Chris ว่ากองตรวจคนเข้าเมืองออกเอกสารผิดประเภทให้กับคณะเดินทาง สำหรับหลายๆ คนแล้วนี่อาจจะเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของความฝังใจกับประสบการณ์ครั้งแรกบนเกาะ Saipan ที่จะประทับอยู่ไปนานแสนนาน แต่โชคดีที่ว่าคณะเดินทางจากประเทศไทยที่ร่วมเดินทางมาทุกท่านนั้นมีความอดทนอยู่มากเพื่อไม่ให้เสียความรู้สึกในช่วงเริ่มต้นของการเดินทาง และพยายามทำทุกอย่างเพื่อให้ผ่านพ้นสถานการณ์ไปด้วยดี ผมไม่สงสัยเลยว่าพวกเขาจะมีความใจเย็นขนาดนี้ อันนี้น่าจะเป็นเพราะอุปนิสัยของคนไทยส่วนใหญ่เป็นคนที่มีความเยือกเย็น และอดทนสูงกระมัง

แม้ว่าจะมีปัญหาติดขัดที่กองตรวจคนเข้าเมืองอยู่บ้าง แต่คณะเดินทางก็ผ่านพ้นมาได้ด้วยดี การเดินทางในครั้งนี้เราได้เรียนรู้คุณค่าของสันติสุขจากช่วงเวลาที่ประชาชนของ NMI ต้องผ่านสงครามมา อีกทั้งการอยู่ร่วมกันของผู้คนหลากหลายสัญชาติอย่างไม่ขัดแย้ง และการรู้จักรักษาธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม ในแต่ละจุดท่องเที่ยวทางธรรมชาตินั้นไม่มีร้านค้าที่คอยจับจ้องนักท่องเที่ยวมาเป็นลูกค้าเลย ไม่ว่าจะเป็น Banzai Cliff Last Command Post Bird Island หรือ Mt. Tapocha ก็ล้วนแต่เป็นจุดท่องเที่ยวทางธรรมชาติและมีคุณค่าทางประวัติศาสตร์ให้ได้ชื่นชมกัน

ผมไม่อยากจะเชื่อสายตาตัวเองเลยว่าจะได้มีโอกาสมาสัมผัสกับท้องฟ้าใสสีน้ำเงินเข้มกับสีส้มของตะวันดวงโตในยามเย็นเช่นนี้ทุกๆ วัน อีกความใฝ่ฝันหนึ่งที่กลายมาเป็นจริงแล้วคือการได้ล่องเรือชมพระอาทิตย์อัสดงที่มีชื่อเสียงระดับโลกกับ Sunset Dinner Cruise รอบเกาะ Managaha เรือลำนี้เป็นเรือแบบ Catamaran จุคนได้ประมาณ 40 คน อาหารที่เสริฟเป็นแบบ set menu ซึ่งมีทั้งอาหารทะเลและเนื้อย่างบริการ มีนักดนตรีชาวฟิลิปปินส์มาขับกล่อมบรรเลงเพลงจากกีต้าร์โปร่งขณะรับประทานอาหารได้อย่างสราญใจ

เราทุกคนคาดหวังว่าจะได้ดำน้ำกันรอบๆ Saipan อย่างเต็มที่แต่ก็ต้องผิดหวังเนื่องด้วยอากาศไม่อำนวย แต่ก็ยังโชคดีที่ได้มีโอกาสดำน้ำในจุดที่เรียกว่า "The Saipan Grotto" เป็นจุดดำน้ำแบบ Cavern ที่มีชื่อเสียงเป็นอันดับสองของโลก ลักษณะของจุดดำน้ำเป็นเวิ้งถ้ำขนาดใหญ่ที่เกิดจากภูเขาหินปูน ในคราวหนึ่งมีนักดำน้ำอยู่ราว 40 คนในถ้ำ แต่ก็ยังดูเหมือนว่ายังสามารถรองรับนักดำน้ำได้ถึงกว่าร้อยคนโดยไม่มีปัญหาการจราจรใต้น้ำแต่อย่างใด นั่นคือความใหญ่โตของถ้ำ ไฮไลท์ของจุดดำน้ำนี้ก็คือแสงสีฟ้าที่ลอดเข้ามาในความมืดสลัวของถ้ำทั้งสามจุด ซึ่งถ้ำแห่งนี้เชื่อมต่อกับทะเลอีกด้านหนึ่ง ทำเอามือสมัครเล่นที่เพิ่งมาดำในถ้ำรวมทั้งผู้เชี่ยวชาญอย่างผมต้องตะลึงพรึงเพริดกับความงามเลยทีเดียว ผมหวังจะได้เจอถ้ำเช่นนี้ในเมืองไทย แต่ยังคงต้องค้นหาอยู่ต่อไป จะว่าไปแล้วจุดดำน้ำแห่งนี้ก็ยังนับว่ามีความเสี่ยงต่อนักดำน้ำที่ไม่ได้ฝึกฝนมาในระดับจะดำในถ้ำได้ Dive Master ที่พาคณะเดินทางของเราไปที่จุดดำน้ำแห่งนี้ชื่อคุณ Brady Barrineau และเป็นเจ้าของร้านดำน้ำชื่อ Stingray Divers บนเกาะ Saipan เขาเล่าว่าทุกปีจะมีอุบัติเหตุครั้งหนึ่งเป็นอย่างน้อย จึงควรใช้ความระมัดระวังให้มากเป็นพิเศษ  อันตรายที่กล่าวมาเป็นเรื่องที่ป้องกันและสามารถคาดการณ์ล่วงหน้าได้

ด้วยสภาพอากาศที่ดูจะไม่เอื้ออำนวย เราได้ดำที่จุดเดิมนี้อีกเป็นครั้งที่สอง ทั้งตัวผมซึ่งคงไม่ต้องบอกกับสมาชิกที่ร่วมเดินทางมาด้วยอีกสี่ท่านเพลิดเพลินกับการดำน้ำที่จุดนี้เป็นอย่างมาก เพราะเริ่มมีความคุ้นเคยกับจุดดำน้ำมากขึ้น ส่วนอีกสองท่านขอไปพักก่อนเนื่องจากจุดดำน้ำแห่งนี้ต้องอาศัยพละกำลังก่อนลงดำมากพอสมควร นักดำน้ำจะต้องแต่งอุปกรณ์เต็มยศแล้วเดินลงบันไดไปประมาณร้อยกว่าขั้นถึงบริเวณปากถ้ำซึ่งจะสามารถโดดลงดำน้ำได้ นับเป็นประสบการณ์แปลกใหม่สำหรับนักดำน้ำแบบสันทนาการทั่วไปทีเดียว เป็นที่น่าเสียดายว่าเราไม่ได้ไปดำที่จุดอื่นๆ จึงต้องขอผลัดไปเป็นการเดินทางในครั้งต่อไป

บนเกาะแห่งนี้ นักท่องเที่ยวยังสามารถทำกิจกรรมทางน้ำได้อีกหลายอย่างอาทิ บานาน่าโบ๊ท พาราเซล เจ็ทสกี และ การดำดูปะการังน้ำตื้นที่ผิวน้ำ

ที่พักของเราอยู่ในย่าน Susupe มี่ชื่อว่า World Resort Saipan จากบริเวณหน้าหาดของรีสอร์ทเพียง 500 เมตรโดยประมาณ มีรถถังของญี่ปุ่นสมัยสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 จมอยู่ในระดับน้ำตื้นซึ่งสามารถดำในระดับผิวน้ำชมได้ ซากที่หลงเหลือจากสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 นั้นมีให้เห็นอยู่ในหลายพื้นที่เป็นเครื่องเตือนใจให้เราได้เรียนรู้จากประวัติศาสตร์ที่น่าเศร้าสลด

"Managaha" เป็นเกาะเล็กๆ แห่งหนึ่งถูกเช่าโดยนักลงทุนชาวญี่ปุ่น เป็นเกาะที่มีชื่อเสียงระดับโลก ชายหาดมีความงดงามสมคำร่ำลือ เกาะนี้มีขนาดไม่ใหญ่นัก ทำให้นักท่องเที่ยวสามารถใช้เวลาเดินชมทัศนียภาพโดยรอบได้ในเวลาเพียง 30 นาที ผมไม่อยากเชื่อในภาพที่ปรากฏต่อสายตาเลย ท้องฟ้า มหาสมุทร ทรายขาว และหญิงสาวที่งดงามบนเกาะเช่นนี้เคยผ่านสายตาแต่ในภาพวาดสีน้ำมันบนผืนผ้าใบ คำบรรยายภาพของผมคงไม่สมจริงเท่ากับการที่คุณจะได้มาสัมผัสด้วยสายตาของคุณเอง

กิจกรรมยามค่ำคืนที่นักท่องเที่ยวไม่ควรพลาดชมคือ "Dai-Ichi Cultural Dinner Show" ซึ่งมีการแสดงชุดของชาวเกาะจากหลายวัฒนธรรม ไม่ว่าจะเป็น ระบำชาวเกาะไซปัน ซามัว ตาฮีติ และเมารี ผู้ชมยังได้อิ่มอร่อยกับอาหารแบบ
บาร์บีคิวรสเลิศขณะนั่งชมการแสดงด้วย โชว์ตระการตาที่สามารถหาชมได้อีกแห่งหนึ่งคือที่ "Hyatt Hotel\'s Sand Castle" เป็นการชมการแสดงแบบค็อกเทล มีการแสดงมายากลและการเต้นโชว์โดยนักเต้นมืออาชีพ

สำหรับใครที่ต้องการผ่อนคลายหลังเหน็ดเหนื่อยจากการทำกิจกรรมและท่องเที่ยวมาทั้งวันก็สามารถแวะไปใช้บริการของ Mandara Spa ที่โรงแรม Hafa Adai เป็นวิธีที่ช่วยฟื้นฟูร่างกายและผ่อนคลายความเหนื่อยล้าได้อย่างยอดเยี่ยม นักบำบัดของที่นี่เป็นมืออาชีพและมีทักษะในการทำทรีทเม้นท์ได้อย่างน่าประทับใจ

พวกเรามีโอกาสได้แวะไปเยี่ยมเยือนเกาะ Tinian ในช่วงสุดท้ายของแผนการเดินทาง สำหรับผมนั้นรู้สึกพอใจมากที่ได้เป็นสักขีพยานสถานที่สำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์ของโลก นั่นคือหลุมบรรจุปรมาณูลูกที่หนึ่งที่ถล่มเมืองฮิโรชิมา ซึ่งเป็นจุดสิ้นสุดของสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง ก่อนหน้านั้น เกาะ Tinian ถูกใช้เป็นที่มั่นของกองทัพอากาศญี่ปุ่นในการสั่งโจมตี Pearl Harbour และบนเกาะ Tinian นี้เองที่ญี่ปุ่นได้สร้างลานบินเพื่อลงจอดทั้งสิ้นสี่จุด หนี่งในนั้นมีชื่อว่า Ushi Field ส่วนสหรัฐอเมริกาก็ได้สร้างลานบินที่เรียกว่า North Field ลานบินทั้งหมดนี้นับเป็นจุดที่มีการจราจรมากที่สุดในโลกในช่วงปี ค.ศ. 1945 เลยทีเดียว เดิมทีนั้นญี่ปุ่นได้ใช้ลานบินในการสู้รบ แต่ต่อมาถูกยึดครองโดยสหรัฐอเมริกาและสหรัฐเองก็ได้สร้างลานบินลงจอดขึ้นอีกแห่งสำหรับเครื่อง B-29 เครื่องบินทิ้งระเบิดที่มีอานุภาพของเครื่องบินชนิดสี่ลำในหนึ่งเดียว บัดนี้ความเจ็บปวดจากสงครามดูจะเลือนหายไป แต่อาจทิ้งความสงสัยไว้ให้กับหลายๆ คนเพราะนักท่องเที่ยวที่มีจำนวนมากที่สุดของ The Northern Marianas Islands กลับเป็นชาวญี่ปุ่น

ใกล้ถึงช่วงสุดท้ายของการเดินทางที่ได้รับมอบหมายครั้งนี้แล้ว อากาศดูจะเป็นใจให้เหล่านักดำน้ำอย่างเรารู้สึกอยากลงไปดำในมหาสมุทรสีฟ้าใสซะเหลือเกิน แต่ด้วยเหตุผลและเงื่อนไขบางประการทำให้เราต้องเก็บเอาไว้โอกาสหน้า เราจึงมุ่งหน้าไปที่ "Taga House" ซึ่งเป็นโบราณสถานของเผ่า Chamorro ยังเป็นเรื่องน่าพิศวงจนถึงทุกวันนี้ว่าชนเผ่า Chamorro เคลื่อนย้ายเสาหินขนาดมหึมาได้อย่างไรทั้งๆ ที่สมัยก่อนนั้นยังไม่มีแม้แต่เครื่องมือในการตัดหินเพื่อมาทำเป็นเสาบ้าน บ้างก็เชื่อว่าเผ่า Chamorro ในสมัยก่อนมีความสามารถยกและเคลื่อนย้ายเสาหินได้จริงๆ ตัวผมเองนั้นก็ยังไม่ทราบแน่ชัด ในขณะที่นักวิทยาศาสตร์บางคนก็ยังค้นหาคำตอบอยู่

มาถึงจุดนี้ผมรู้สึกเศร้าที่การเดินทางต้องสิ้นสุดลง โดยเฉพาะการที่ยังไม่ได้ลงดำน้ำในมหาสมุทรอย่างที่ได้ตั้งใจไว้ อีกทั้งเกาะ "Rota" ที่คล้ายกับมีมนต์ขลังเพรียกหาให้เราไปเยือน จะให้ผมหยุดการเดินทางอยู่เพียงเท่านี้หรือ?  ไม่อย่างแน่นอน ผมจะต้องกลับมาที่เกาะสวรรค์นี้อีกให้จงได้

Saipan, the Pacific Dream

Saipan, the hidden gems of the Northern Marianas Islands are situated in the Pacific Ocean. According to the Chamorro, the name of Saipan refers to "sailing to the island of emptiness". Contrary to its name; this destination has attracted rich tourism especially from the Northeast Asian market. This time Dive & Travel is there to feel , to experience the true beauty of the island. Photojournalist, Joon H. Park has more stories to tell during his 7-day visit.

The primitive beauty of Saipan was revealed in its existence by Magellan, the famous Portuguese explorer in 1521.  There was one time when the Spanish ruled a group of three islands called "the Marianas Islands" which they   kept in control for over 200 years. 

The islands were traded to Germany in 1898. There was also the very first attempt made to establish schools on Saipan in the first years of German administration-one at Garapan, one at Tanapag and one at Rota, under Chamorro teachers.  During the last colonial period of the Spanish regime, there was no routine medical service for the local Chamorros. The German administration immediately started wholesale vaccinations for smallpox, which in the past centuries had been a scourge to the Chamorro population. The Germans also established a police force but then the administration recognized that the peaceful nature of the population hardly made the police force necessary.

But through the inculcation of "habits of punctuality and obedience of cooperation, and of comradeship between Chamorros and Carolinians (two natives of NMI)" among the members of the force, it served a worthwhile purpose. 

After the German colonial period, the NMI was dominated by Japan in 1914 during the World War I. Many soldiers, both natives and Koreans were sacrificed in the battles between USA and Japan.

In 1987, the NMI formally became a federal state of USA under a USA trusteeship since 1944. The Northern Marianas Federation which includes Saipan, Tinian and Rota, is the dominion of the USA and the residents have American citizenship.  Therefore, it has been benefited very much as a federal state of America, and has more independent administrative power than Guam because of the self-governing administration authority.
 
The Marianas is located in the centre of the western Pacific and its overall shape consisting of 14 islands that look like a formation of archery. Saipan is the largest island next to Guam. The beauty of Saipan is reputed by its magnificent view of growing coral reefs and its surrounding shallow corals along the coast. Garapan, the waist of the island is the busiest place being centralized with high grade hotels, restaurants which have a large variety of food from all over the world, a large department store and amusement facilities. The residents in Saipan have lived together in Sosupe, Chalan Kanoa which are the level grounds in the west sea adjacent to the Philippine Ocean.

The Chamorros has mixed with the Carolinians in tradition with the influence of Catholicism under Spain, and the styles of America.  The native Chamorros are 90% in a sixty-nine thousand population. The rest are Korean, Japanese, Filipino, Chinese, and some floating population. 

My initial plan for this journey was to experience the big three islands, Saipan, Tinian and Rota, but it was way, way miscalculated. I and the group of six Thais moved as quickly as we could in order to see and do whatever activities were available for us at every possible corner of the islands. But we could not completely finish the journey since there are so many tourist attractions as well as numerous outdoor and indoor activities on the way. Even though we had seven nights of staying, it was never enough to explore the islands in completion.

As what ordinary travelers might experience, I felt that it is quite impossible to make a perfect journey for a single trip to destinations like these islands. Especially, if the destination is truly a world precious marble destination, then it requires several trips in order to fill up self satisfaction. 

It is quite obvious that the NMI\' major tourists are Korean and Japanese due to its geological reason, and eventually Chinese who are arriving in big volumes.  The air time from those major countries to the NMI is only four hours. Korean and Japanese are not required visas for ordinary travelers, and are permitted to stay in the islands for as long as 30 days. That was the very basic information that I and my six Thai participants were given. Any Thai traveler who plans to visit the NMI must get an "Authorization to Board" letter, which is also known as "ATB" letter from the Division of Immigration. 

The Marianas Visitor Authority (MVA) had the ATB letters waiting for us by the time we arrived at the airport.   I never expected that we were going to have an immigration problem from the beginning of our journey. As a Korean, I was not required to have the ATB document and passed through the immigration smoothly. Somehow, all Thai passports and air tickets were asked to be kept by the immigration officers. This considerably created uncomfortable feelings. Perhaps, it may be a good idea that both governments, Thai and US, should review their international policy to facilitate those who wish to travel more freely.

It seemed that the Immigration Office might have issued the wrong type of letter to us. With all such headaches, the "first impression lasts quite long time" had begun. Fortunately, the six participants were extremely patient and tried to maintain goodwill not to be ruined by the feeling we all got from the beginning of our journey. I had no doubt that this was only possible since they are "Thai".

Despite these immigration hick-ups, the NMI showed us a true value of war and peace, harmony among several different races and how to conserve the precious mother nature. Not a single commercial shop aggressively targeted travelers at any tourism site, such as at Banzai cliff, Suicide cliff, the Last Command post, Bird Island and Mt. Tapochau. There is nothing else but magnificent views of nature as well as historical heritages on the island. I would not believe my eyes that I was witnessing such a cobalt blue sky and burning orange colored sunset every day! I had a big wish that I could observe the world famous sunset at Managaha Island, the pristine god\'s masterpiece, with the Sunset Dinner Cruise. It is a catamaran which can comfortably facilitate 40 people. Meals, set menus of seafood and grilled meat were served on board. A Filipino musician with guitar music really made the dinner cruise even more enjoyable.

We all had big expectations for ocean diving around Saipan but the weather did not permit us to take a dip in the ocean. Although we could not dive in the open ocean, we were so lucky that we could access the world\'s No.2 cavern diving site which is called "The Saipan Grotto". It is truly a huge sea cavern formed inside a limestone mountain. At one time, there were more than 40 divers in the cavern and it seemed that this cavern can invite more than 100 divers without any "traffic jams". The fantastic three blue lights coming from the open ocean side is a real show time for those who never dove in a cavern as well as for experts like myself.  I have been looking for similar caves in the Kingdom. Unfortunately, I still keep looking for it.  It should be noted that this cavern site has potential danger to those who are not trained as  cave or cavern divers.  Mr. Brady Barrineau, the owner of "Stingray Diver", also our dive master, said that this site has at least one diving fatality every year. So watch out for the potential and foreseen dangers associated with this very much attractive dive site. We made two dives in the Grotto. As for the second dive, not to mention about me, but the rest of the group enjoyed so much because all of us had got used to this site already. Two out of six people dropped the idea since the site was a physical challenge for them. At this site, divers have to wear full gear and walk down over a hundred steps before reaching the water body. It is totally a brand new experience for sports divers. It was a pity that we could not dive anywhere else.  Maybe only on the next visit which I dearly hope to take again.Easy travelers can appreciate a large variety of other water activities such as, banana boat, parasailing, Jet Ski and snorkeling.

There is a World War II Japanese tank sunk in a shallow sea bed which is about 500 metres from the beach, right in front of the hotel where we stayed, World Resort Saipan in Susupe. The WWII heritage is not only at one location, but also at many sites containing historical lessons with tragic tales. 

A small island called "Managaha Island" leased by a group of Japanese investors is truly a world top class island with beautiful beaches. It takes only 30 minutes approximatly to look around the entire island. The sky, the ocean, the sand and the beautiful ladies are not realistic to my eyes as it seems that these could only appear in a master oil painting. It is not just enough to be described by my three- inche tongue, but you must see it for yourself.

A typical night venue would be at "Dai-Ichi\'s Cultural Dinner Show" that performs a series of islanders\' traditional dances by male and female dancers from Saipan, Samoa, Tahiti and New Zealand. Superb food and fantastic performance was quite an excellent combination. Another great show can be found at the "Hayatt Hotel\'s Sand Castle Cocktail Show" which features magical performances with a bunch of attractive female dancers. 

I feel pretty much exhausted at the end of a busy day like this and hope to have an easy time. A place like "Mandara Spa" at Hafa Adai Hotel is certainly an excellent way to rest off my soul and body. It might be unnecessary to mention about their professionalism especially their unforgettable skills which invite guests to have a complete rest,   as if in heaven.

We visited a neighboring island called "Tinian" at the very last moment, and I, myself deeply appreciated that I could witness the WWII atomic bomb loading pit #1 for Hiroshima that ended the WWII. Before this, Tinian Island completely changed the whole world\'s history through a Japanese Air Force communication post which commanded the Pearl Harbor attack. Four air strips were built by Japanese.  One is called Ushi Field. The one that was built by Americans is called North Field. They were the biggest and busiest airfields in 1945 throughout the world. 

These air strips were used by Japanese and were taken over by Americans. USA built one more air strip in order to launch one complete B-29 formation bomber which is four planes in one unit. Even though the wound from tragic war might have been healed, but for some, it may seem hard to comprehend why Japanese have become one category of major tourists to visit this destination.

As our time for the assignment came closer to an end, the weather ridiculously became super fine, in which   we definitely would want to dip into the emerald ocean before heading back home.  Unfortunately, we had to leave it for the next time due to certain circumstances. Instead, we headed to the "Taga House" that is the legacy of Chamorro. The fact that ancient Chamorros did not have proper tools to cut and transport these gigantic stones used as foundations for the house is still the biggest mystery which has not been solved till now. A source told me that ancient Chamorros could lift and transport these alone, but honestly, I could not confirm this. Some scientists are still searching for the answer. 

I felt desperate as our journey finally came to end but we still did not dip into the ocean, especially the last island called "Rota" which was still luring us from distance.  Am I going to give up like this? I don\'t think so! No, I would rather say that I will make sure that "I\'ll be back".

The CNMI (Common Wealth of Northern Marianas Islands) is definitely an earth heritage and highly recommended to all travelers who wish to do sightseeing, diving or even golfing on the four world class golf courses of your choice. Heaven here is just beyond the horizon but, no pain no gain!!! Would you like to discover the hidden gems yourself? I bet you do!
